Ashley Wheater Letter

On this exciting day, I invite you to join me as I embrace a new creative journey that brings together the artistic expression of the Company with that of the Academy at The Joffrey Ballet under my leadership as its new Artistic Director.

Our evolution follows a larger pursuit to modernize The Joffrey Ballet into one of the world’s most innovative artistic endeavors and allows us to embrace a universal creative vision across the Company and Academy. Last year, in partnership with our Board of Directors and other key stakeholders, the Joffrey developed a five-year strategic plan, which included evolving the Academy.

I am excited for the opportunity to fully realize my artistic vision at every level — ensuring the development and execution of training syllabi; better integrating the Academy with the Joffrey’s programs; ensuring the Trainee Program and Studio Company continue to be a feeder for new Company members and continuing the mission of providing world-class dance training and education.

But I could not be so positive about our future without being grateful for our past.

We are fortunate to build on a foundation of artistic excellence and we wish Anna and Alexei the very best as they pursue their own future professional evolutions. I am honored to build on it with a new vision for the future.

I am eager to welcome two new directors—Head of the Trainee Program and Head of the Pre-Professional Program. Each Director will report to Karine Provost serving in a newly elevated role Academy Director.

I invite you to join me in gratitude for our history and in ecstatic anticipation for what lies ahead.
