Blue Bird of Happiness

Overview

The Joffrey Academy’s 2014 spring production, May 15-18, 2014 will be a world premiere of Maurice Maeterlinck’s Blue Bird of Happiness, choreographed by Academy Artistic Director Alexei Kremnev.

Wildly inventive and effortlessly enchanting, The Blue Bird of Happiness combines spectacular costumes, visionary choreography and ingenious dramatic effects.

Based upon Nobel Prize-winner Maurice Maeterlinck's play, this contemporary adaptation takes two young children on an allegorical voyage that bridges the chasm between the conscious and the unconscious. Joined by magically humanized pets and living house-hold objects, brother and sister Tyltyl and Mytyl travel through a series of dream worlds on a quest for the elusive Blue Bird of Happiness.

What critics are saying about Alexei Kremnev's choreography:

"With choreography by Alexei Kremnev, it brought dance for kids to a whole new level. He created some of the most interesting children's choreography in memory."

-Carol Norris for Cincinnati Enquirer

"Kremnev's musical sense is outstanding. He's got an encyclopedic sense of what works for his purposes, uncannily links the mix and fits movements as though the collection was written specifically for him."
