In collaboration with The Auditorium Theatre and the Dance Center of Columbia College, The Joffrey Ballet is thrilled to present a masterpiece of imagination and timeless inner tranquility. Songs of the Wanderers, a visually stunning paean to spiritual pilgrimage, is a signature work of Taiwan’s leading contemporary dance company. Inspired by Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha, asceticism and the quest for quietude, Lin Hwai-min transforms ancient rites into mesmerizing dance theatre. Set to soulful Georgian folk songs, startlingly beautiful images are created through a blend of Eastern and Western dance styles, with absolute focus and control by the performers. The set is created from an astonishing three and a half tons of shimmering golden grains of rice that shower down on the stage throughout the piece.
"Visually stunning and exquisitely performed in deliberate slow motion; the audience jumped up to offer a cheering ovation," raved The New York Times.
A work of wild eroticism, contemplative mystery and ecstatic beauty.” — Chicago Sun-Times
