Chicago is hopping with dance opps for kids

To introduce Chicago to the range of dance class offerings at the city's newest collaborative dance/arts facility, the American Rhythm Center (ARC) will host Dance Free 4 All—two days of free classes on Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22. All ability levels are encouraged to take advantage of the sessions covering tap, jazz, African, flamenco, Bollywood and classic Indian, swing, Latin, capoeira, tai chi and more.

Teaching the classes on the third floor of the Fine Arts Building on 410 South Michigan Avenue will be professionals and young dancers representing ARC's community partners and other affiliated groups, including Chicago Human Rhythm Project's resident ensemble BAM!, Chicago Chinese Cultural Center, Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, Giordano Dance Chicago, Kalapriya Center for Indian Performing Arts. The Joffrey Ballet seeks dancers between 4’ and 5’ tall and generally 9-14 years of age for its annual production of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. Auditions for the Children's Cast will be held on Sunday, September 16 at the Joffrey Tower on 10 East Randolph Street.

All rehearsals are coordinated by Joffrey Academy Faculty and Joffrey Ballet Masters. Students who are cast receive a detailed rehearsal schedule once they confirm participation. The Nutcracker Children’s Cast roles are Party Girls and Boys, Polichinelles (Mother Ginger’s kids), Battle Mice, Soldiers, Mounted Mice, Snow Tree Angels, and Dolls.

Children interested in auditioning will be asked to stay untl 3:00 pm. Candidates must bring a headshot and audition form (located at Female students should wear a black leotard, pink tights and pink shoes. Male students should wear a white t-shirt, black tights and black shoes.

Audition slots are based on age and height requirements as follows:

Age: 9-11
; Height: 4’ - 4’5” 

Registration: 9:00 -10:00 am
; Audition: 10:00 - 11:15 am

Age: 10-14; 
Height: 4’5” - 5’

Registration: 10:30 -11:30 am
; Audition: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Age: 9-10; 
Height: 4’5” - 5’
