My daughter and I attended the opening night of The Nutcracker performed by the Joffrey Ballet this past Friday evening. This season marks The 25th Anniversary of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker and Friday was the first in a 22-performance engagement at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (50 E. Congress Parkway)
I had set the stage well. When she arrived home from school I had a brand new Holiday dress (with matching accessories), a wooden nutcracker and a Nutcracker story book waiting in her room as way of an announcement of our plans for the evening!
On the way into the city on the train I had her read the book so that she would be familiar with the story, once finished she played with her Nutcracker and anxiously awaited pulling into Union station. Although I’ve seen the Joffrey Ballet perform the Nutcracker a few times over the years this would be my daughter’s first introduction not only to the Nutcracker but to a ballet performance.
She was even more excited once we arrived and was in awe of the majestic Auditorium theater, especially when I told her it was over 100 years old!
Once we were seated we did not have to wait too long for the curtain to go up. I was watching my daughters face to see her reaction and was pleased to see her mouth drop and her eyes widen, that was the reaction I was hoping for!
We were then delighted with over 2 hours of Toy Soldiers, the Sugar Plum fairy, the Queen and King of Snow, dancing mice, the Nutcracker Prince, and much more. The production was accompanied by music played beautifully by the Chicago Philharmonic.
The Joffrey Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker is always a visual and acoustical delight and the perfect way to start off the Christmas season!
I encourage you to take your kids and make a wonderful memory and perhaps a Holiday tradition!
