Among the many holiday traditions Chicagoans can enjoy in the upcoming month, one of the most visually beautiful is the Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker.

This year’s Nutcracker adds contemporary choreography to Robert Joffrey’s 1987 adaption of this famous ballet.  In adapting it for his dance company, Joffrey took a well-known European ballet which was first performed in Russia in 1892 and gave it a uniquely American perspective.

The Nutcracker features Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky’s famous orchestral score, which was written for the original performance of Nutcracker 118 years ago.  The score will be performed live by the Joffrey Ballet’s resident orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta.

The Nutcracker is a wonderful experience for adults and children alike.  The Joffrey Ballet combines athleticism with artistry and strength with beauty in creative dance experiences.  If you’ve never seen the Joffrey Ballet perform, the Nutcracker would be a wonderful introduction to a world-class ballet company for you and your family.

The Joffrey Ballet, which began in New York City, came to Chicago in 1995 and has since become a prominent part of Chicago’s arts culture.  The company recently moved into its permanent home in the middle of Chicago’s performing arts center downtown surrounded by the Chicago Theater, Goodman Theater and the Gene Siskel Film Center.

The Nutcracker will be performed Thursdays through Sundays, December 10 – December 26 (no performance on Christmas).  Tickets can be purchased online.

The Joffrey Ballet performs in the beautiful Auditorium Theater at 50 E. Congress Parkway (between Michigan and Wabash) in downtown Chicago.  Discounted parking for theater goers is available across the street at Loop Auto Parks (524 S. Wabash).  Click here for complete directions and parking and public transportation information.

By the way, Whole Foods has designated Wednesday, December 1 as Joffrey’s 5% Day, which means the Joffrey Ballet will receive 5% of all Whole Food sales on that day in all of their five metro Chicago stores - Halsted & Waveland, Gold Coast, Lakeview, South Loop, and Lincoln Park. This is a great opportunity to support the Joffrey Ballet just by buying the groceries you need.
