Prepare to be enchanted and entertained at the Joffrey Ballet’s performance of La Bayadere: the Temple Dancer, choreographed by Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch and accompanied by the Chicago Philharmonic.
Originally performed by the Imperial Ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1877, the ballet premieres at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University on October 16, and will be performed 10 times through October 27.
The Temple Dancer is filled with drama, intrigue and intertwined with a love affair between the dancer and a warrior, all set in the exotic Orient of the 19th century. The performance is based on Marius Petipa’s classic choreography. The highlight of the ballet is the renowned scene “Kingdom of the Shades,” which displays 26 handmade tutus. Expect a fanciful set and over 121 opulent costumes created by British designer Peter Farmer.
“La Bayadere is a legendary ballet, with the third act ‘Kingdom of the Shades’ reigning as one of the most memorable dance sequences in the classical tradition,” says Ashley Wheater, Joffrey Ballet artistic director. “I sought a fresh way of telling the story 136 years after its creation. Stanton Welch’s production breathes new life into La Bayadere, while retaining the best of Marius Petipa’s original choreography. Stanton has compressed and clarified the story, focusing on physical action rather than traditional pantomime. The story is told through movement with athleticism that appeals to contemporary audiences.”
