At the very moment the Joffrey Ballet is preparing to open its “Winter Fire” season at the Auditorium Theatre (running Feb. 15-26) and celebrate the Chicago premiere of a new documentary film, “Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance” (Feb. 18 and 22 at the Siskel Film Center), the company has announced its plans for the 2012-13 season, with a lineup as follows:
† Fall Season (Oct. 17-28): A reprise of James Kudelka’s lush, technically challenging “Pretty BALLET,” set to Bohuslav Martinu’s Symphony No. 2; Jiri Kylian’s “Forgotten Land,” to the music of Benjamin Britten (a work not revived by the Joffrey since 1985)m and a remount of “the Green Table,” celebrating the 80th anniversary of this searing anti-war ballet created in 1932 by Kurt Jooss (to music by F.A. Cohen) — a work that holds a seminal place in the repertoire of the Joffrey, which, in 1967, became the first American company to perform it.
† Winter Season (Feb. 13-24, 2013): Remounts of “Interplay,” Jerome Robbins’ 1945 piece about the move from childhood to adolescence and young adulthood, set to music by Morton Gould, and Twyla Tharp’s “Nine Sinatra Songs,” a work in the key of the 1950s that has long been considered one of Tharp’s strongest dances, plus a world premiere by Stanton Welch, artistic director of the Houston Ballet, that will debut when the Joffrey performs at the fabled Jacob’s Pillow Festival in August.
† Spring Season (April 24-May 5, 2013): In celebration of choreographer Lar Lubovitch’s 70th birthday, a reprise of the Joffrey’s hugely successful 2009 production of his full-length ballet, “Othello,” based on Shakespeare’s play and other sources, and set to an original score by Elliot B. Goldenthal.
The annual production of Robert Joffrey’s “The Nutcracker,” celebrating its 25th anniversary, will run Dec. 7-27.
Subscriptions (which do not include “The Nutcracker”) will be available beginning Monday. Call (312) 386-8905 or visit joffrey.org.
