Dose of Design

The Joffrey Ballet's Couture & Cocktails, co-chaired by Sonya Jackson and Kristina McGrath, plans to launch the 2012-2013 Joffrey season in high style on Sept. 28, thanks to a Pamella Roland spring 2013 runway presentation. We catch up with Pamella DeVos, the designer behind those stunning red carpet gowns.

What was the inspiration behind this collection?

For spring 2013, the Pamella Roland collection was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Ellsworth Kelly. I love his black-and-white paintings in particular because they convey a visual vocabulary all his his own in a modern way. I wanted to use this same approach to modernism, using sleek shapes and embellishment that looks futuristic.

Any favorite pieces?

The piece I look forward to wearing is the white cilk crepe suit with sheer panels that create a streamlined silhouette, but I would have it made in a beautiful blush color. Overall, my favorite look in the spring 2013 collection is the sleek fluid gown in blush silk crepe with matching Maco beadwork - I really love the blush tones this season!

Women adore your gowns. What do you think attracts them to your designs?

Actresses as well as our customers always tell us that our gowns are beautiful, comfortable and make them feel amazing. Since I attend many fundraisers and other events, I know that feeling beautiful and being comfortable are both important.

This is the second time your designs have been featured at Couture & Cocktails. How did you become involved with the Joffrey Ballet?

We're honored to have our designs featured at Couture & Cocktails for the second time this September. I met mant of the wonderful people involved with the Joffrey when we participated in Couture & Cocktails the first time, and everyone associated with the Joffrey has made it one of my favorite arts organizations. I am now a memeber of the Women's Board, and I am thrilled to be a part of one of the most reverd dance companies in the world!
