Citlali Lopez-Ortiz



Dr. López-Ortiz received her BS (Licentiate) in Physics with Honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She earned a Master’s Degree in Dance, with a specialty in Kinesiology, from the State University of New York at Brockport and a PhD in Kinesiology with specialization in Biomechanics and Motor Control from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She had postdoctoral training as an Institutional and Individual National Research Service Award Fellow of the National Institutes of Health on the Pathophysiology of Movement Disorders at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the Department of Physical Therapy and Movement Sciences of Northwestern University. Dr. López-Ortiz received formal training in classical ballet at the Ballet Academy of Coyoacán directed by Ana Castillo. Her instructors included teachers and dancers from the Vaganova School of Ballet, the Ballet School of the Paris Opera, the Cuban School of Ballet, the Royal Academy of Dancing, The Martha Graham Company, The José Limón Dance Company, The Alvin Nicolais Dance Company, David Parsons Dance Company, The Garth Fagan Dance Company, and the National Company of Dance-Mexico and Ballet Folklorico de Mexico among others. She was honored with the only Classical Ballet Teacher Certification from the Ballet Academy of Coyoacán under the supervision of Ana Castillo and Fernando Alonso from the Cuban School of Ballet. For twenty years, Dr. López-Ortiz has taught classical ballet and other dance forms in elite conservatory dance programs and Universities. Currently, she is faculty member at the Joffrey Academy of Dance, the Official School of the Joffrey Ballet.


As Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and Research Scientist in the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Dr. López-Ortiz is currently developing the scientific basis for Dance as therapy for rehabilitation of movement disorders and enhancement of movement learning. Her work focuses on typically developing children, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. Her research in the laboratory is complemented by teaching ballet to children with cerebral palsy and adults with Parkinson’s disease.
