Jennifer Sprowl, Artistic Director, Duncan Dance Chicago
Jennifer Sprowl is a fourth generation Duncan Dancer dedicated to the preservation and extension of Duncan technique into the 21st century. A founding member of Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company in New York City, Sprowl trained directly with Duncan Dance luminaries Lori Belilove, Hortense Kooluris, and Julia Levien. She received classical training with the Dayton Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, danced with the Rebecca Kelly Dance Co., and continued her modern dance studies with Bill Evans, Eleanor King, and Hannah Kahn.


Ms. Sprowl has taught at the Boitsov Classical Ballet, Lou Conte Dance Studio, the Joffrey Academy of Dance, and conducted outreach Master Classes in suburban dance studios as well as Duncan classes at Joffrey Academy in Chicago. 

In her current role as Artistic Director of Duncan Dance Chicago, Sprowl fosters an education for dancers from a therapeutic, uplifting, and empowering perspective to rekindle Isadora’s “school of life.” The sole Duncan teacher in the city, she has staged innovative interpretations of Isadora’s repertoire for Momenta, The Chicago Academy for the Arts, and Duncan Dance Chicago. She co-founded the Isadora Duncan International Symposium, which held its second conference in Chicago in June 2015.


Most recently, Ms. Sprowl appears with Meg Brooker and Valerie Durham as a featured artist in the collaborative project, Dancestry, showcasing the works of Duncan, Loïe Fuller, and Erick Hawkins. She is also one of Loyola University Dance Concert choreographers for 2015-16.


A specialist in the field of pre/post rehabilitation for dancers, Sprowl is a graduate of the Ohashi Institute of Shiatsu, certified as an Active-Isolated Stretch/Strength practitioner based on the work of Aaron Mattes. She works privately as a Certified Flexibility Technician and has extensive training in Gyrokinesis, Yamuna Body Rolling, and Power Pilates.

Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet, is the only training program owned, operated or endorsed by The Joffrey Ballet. The Joffrey Ballet is not affiliated with any other dance training or school program, including the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. The Joffrey Academy, located in the Exelon Education Center at Joffrey Tower in Chicago, Illinois is the only school that follows the organizational mission, training syllabi, and artistic vision of The Joffrey Ballet.
